The aftermath of a fiery B-1 crash at Ellsworth Air Force Base on Jan. 4, 2024.

The Air Force is relieving an Ellsworth Air Force Base colonel of his duties in the wake of a report identifying operational issues at the base.

Col. Mark Kimball was operations group commander of the 28th Bomb Wing stationed at Ellsworth.

He’s being relieved due to “a loss of trust and confidence in his ability” based on the investigation into a crash of a B-1 bomber, according to a statement from the Air Force Global Strike Command.

Two airmen were injured when a bomber crashed on Jan. 4.

The crash report released this summer said crew errors in addition to weather conditions led to that crash. It also flatly pointed to broader organizational problems at Ellsworth, including poor communication, inadequate focus on airmanship skills and lack of supervisory oversight.

Josh Chilson is the news director at South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
