As deer-mating season begins in the fall – it’s important to keep an extra eye out on the roads.
According to AAA statistics - in 2023 – South Dakota’s average animal strike insurance claim was over $7,700. That’s up 31% from the same figure in 2022.
Shawn Steward is the Public Affairs Manager for AAA South Dakota. He said the reason for the increase in insurance claims is not necessarily the deer’s fault.
“While there’s many factors at play, the sharp increase is due in large part to new vehicle technology. That includes cameras and sensors that are often in your windshield, your bumper, your rearview mirrors, and those things drastically drive up the cost of repairs,” Steward said.
As deer mating season gets into full swing in the month of October there are many precautionary measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of animal strikes.
Steward said one is being attentive while behind the wheel.
“So, it’s really important to focus on [the road]. Keep scanning from side to side, especially on the sides of the road. You know, look for deer, be especially attentive at dawn and dusk when the deer are more active. And know where deer may typically populate, sources of water, wooded areas. Just be extra cautious and be on the lookout for deer this time of year,” Steward said.
He also said if you see a large animal - like a deer - on the road, one long honk from your horn can often scare the animal away.
However - if you do find yourself in an animal collision, move the vehicle to a safe location, call the police, put your hazard lights on and contact your insurance company as quickly as possible.
The number one priority in any animal collision should always be you and your passenger’s safety.
