Some South Dakota county sheriff agencies are entering electronic monitoring contracts with SuperCom.
The Israel-based company provides real-time GPS tracking, communication capabilities technologies.
The company has started to pick up steam in the U.S. due to its performance in both urban and rural environments. South Dakota is the fourth state in the U.S. to enter into agreements with the company.
Staci Ackerman is the Executive Director of the South Dakota Sheriffs’ Association. She said a pricing agreement between the Association and SuperCom helped make it affordable.
“They have entered into an agreement with us that if a county joins in and participates using their electronic monitoring, they get the benefit of that competitive pricing. Charles Mix, Clay, Day County and Lake County are the four counties that I am aware of that have taken advantage of this competitive pricing structure,” Ackerman said.
SuperCom said they have reached an agreement with 7 counties – but the other three are not named at this moment.
Ackerman said lot of rural counties have less population for sheriffs to cover - which can make partnering with SuperCom more affordable than the alternatives.
She said for more populous counties - like Minnehaha – SuperCom may not be as feasible financially.
