Sioux Falls’ annual hydrant flushing program begins Monday.

The city performs this service every spring to remove sediments and to test the city’s water system.

“The hydrant flushing program is an important part of our preventative maintenance process to continue delivering safe drinking water and ensuring hydrants are functional in case of an emergency,” said Darin McDonnel, the City’s Water Distribution System Supervisor.

Crews begin on the north side of town and work their way south. The process usually takes several weeks.

Officials say residents who have crews working in their neighborhoods might notice slight discoloration in their tap water. They say this doesn’t pose a health risk, but they advise against doing laundry if you notice it.

Anyone with questions about water quality is asked to contact the water purification plant at 605-373-6950 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or 605-367-8805 after office hours.
