A volunteer firefighter died while responding to a grass fire in central South Dakota.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a 37-year-old man crashed a fire tender Saturday evening on a rural road north of Draper. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
Investigators said the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
A statement from the Murdo volunteer fire Department confirmed the driver was a member of the department. The fire that prompted the call was later contained.
The firefighter's name has not been released.
"The Murdo Volunteer Fire Department asks that you respect the family's and department's privacy at this difficult time," the statement read. "An investigation of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy is underway."
