A widespread and sudden power outage hit much of the Rapid City area Thursday.
Reports from Black Hills Energy indicate the blackout impacted much of the Black Hills and extended into Wyoming. At peak, the utility estimates over 40,000 customers were affected.
BHE cites an outside transmission facility as the cause of the regional outage. The company’s response plan was activated shortly after the blackout was first reported.
Rapid City officials deployed police to guide vehicles as city traffic signals were also affected.
