The 29th annual Northern Plains Indian Art Market continues its tradition of celebrating world-class American Indian art Sept. 15-18 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The art market, open to the public and held at the Ramkota Exhibit Hall, coincides with a prestigious juried art show with more than $13,000 in prize money, as well as juror forums during the four-day event.
Established in 1988, the market features traditional and contemporary, fine and tribal arts by indigenous people of the Northern Plains, including tribes from Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Canada. Works include sculpture, paintings, jewelry, pottery, beadwork, quilting, and quillwork. Since the show’s inception, it has grown into a nationally recognized showcase of American Indian art.
Three of this year’s jurors will present public discussions on their experiences with Native American Art. All three events will be held at 7pm, Thursday, September 15, at three locations:
• South Dakota Art Museum, Brookings hosts Christina Burke, Curator of Native American and Non-Western Art at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
• Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center, Sioux Falls welcomes John Lukavic, Associate Curator at the Denver Art Museum.
• University of South Dakota Art Galleries, Vermillion hosts Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty, renowned Assiniboine Sioux bead worker and porcupine quill worker from California.
Judging for the 2016 NPIAM Juried Show will take place Friday, September 16. A reception and viewing will be held at the Washington Pavilion from 7pm to 8:30pm, Sept. 16. Admission is $25.
