Registration is now open for the second leg of the Deadwood to Medora Trail Ride, which takes place this summer.
The historic event drew 200 participants last year and is expected to include a similar number come August.
When reports of gold spread around the world in the late 1800s, the Marquis de Mores established his own stagecoach line from Medora, North Dakota to the Black Hills mining town of Deadwood.
The cost was 10 cents per mile.
Last year, trail riders followed the historic route from Deadwood to Buffalo, South Dakota.
Deadwood History spokesperson Karin Savoie says this year’s journey begins at Buffalo and ends with a parade through the streets of Medora.
“This allows people to really get a sense of what travel was during that time,” notes Savoie. “And we’re also going to be crossing over the National Grasslands, which is the most beautiful part of this ride. This is one of the reasons why so many people are interested in this. You are I history…making history at this time, as well.”
Savoie says people also enjoy the camaraderie they experience along the trail.
