Summer Reading Loss

The South Dakota Department of Education is running a campaign this summer to encourage students to read skill-level appropriate books, in an effort to curb summer learning loss also referred to as "summer slide." The state education department has partnered with MetaMetrics which developed an online tool called "Find a Book" that allows parents/students to create reading lists based on students' perceived skill level and interests. The company also pioneered something called Lexile measures which can help educators/parents/librarians select skill-appropriate books for their students. Melody Schopp, South Dakota Secretary of Education, and Dr. Malbert Smith, president of Metametrics, discuss the program.
