Dakota Midday: A Celebration of Grete Bodogaard

The Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City has a new retrospective celebrating the life and work of South Dakota textile artist Grete Bodagaard, who is currently in hospice care. The work in the show comes from the collections of her friends, family and others.

Bodogaard moved to South Dakota from Norway in 1969. She lived in Vermillion, Rapid City, and Fort Pierre, and most recently in Volin, where she shared a studio with her husband, the writer and filmmaker Chuck Nauman. The master-weaver has driven all over South Dakota as an Artist in the Schools with the South Dakota Art Council’s program. She is the recipient of the 2002 South Dakota Governor’s Award for Creative.

Her friends and family came together last weekend for a gallery reception at the Dahl. Some were wearing the scarves and clothing she decorated and wove as they reflected on her life and work.

Rapid City freelancer Victoria L. Wicks has been producing news for SDPB since August 2007. She Retired from this position in March 2023.
