The weather’s supposed to be “seasonable” in Rapid City this weekend…which, if you’ve lived here for any length of time you’ll realize, can mean almost anything. But some people think it’s actually a perfect opportunity for…a beach party.
Hearing the sounds of a classic Beach Boys song might make you automatically think of… warm weather, less clothing and, well, lots of other things…especially the beach. And that’s just what the folks at Main Street Square have in mind for this Saturday when they celebrate the last day of ice-skating in the heart of Rapid City, says spokesperson Megan Whitman.
“What better to do when it’s cold than celebrate that warm is coming,” Whitman explains. “We’ve done a beach party every year to close out the end of the ice-skating season. And we really try to make it a festive atmosphere with Hawaiian leis…a skate purchase…and also we have beach-theme music….and island-style music that’s playing over the loud system…and we just try to really celebrate the fact that the cold is almost over and things are going to warm up.”
Hopefully. Whitman says the fourth annual Main Street Square Beach Party is scheduled to take place as long as the temperature stays between 0 and 70 and it’s not too windy.
As for what to wear, Whitman says that’s totally up to the individual. She’s seen everything from fleece to shorts to grass skirts at the party where you may not catch a wave, but you can certainly cut some ice.
