A senior citizen art show is opening Thursday in Sioux Falls. The exhibit showcases work from people 60 years and older from across South Dakota.
The 21st annual Dakota MasterWorks juried art show includes visual pieces created by artists of all levels. LuAnn Severson is the exhibit coordinator. She says the show focuses on the positive aspects of aging.
“Our association works with nursing homes and assisted living. So we just really want to bring out the talent that allot of these seniors have that we know throughout the state. And they can demonstrate that through their art work.”
Severson says past shows have been nationally recognized for their positive aging campaign. She says there are nearly 150 entries this year.
“We’re beginning to see instances of more than one generation of a family that are participating in the show. For instance, maybe a mother began entering the paintings like two decades ago already and now her children are old enough for them to be part of the show. So in some cases we’re also seeing spouses participate together and we’re just really starting to see that bond within families.”
The show is now open in Sioux Falls. Severson says judges plan to award 42 entries. The winning pieces are scheduled for future display at galleries in Sioux Falls and Pierre.
