In The Moment ... May 8, 2019 Show 571 Hour 1
In The early 1900s, a Danish artist and ethnographer traveled among the nomadic reindeer herders of northersn Scandanavia, gathering stories.
Emilie Demant Hatt brought her own viewpoint to the process as she became close with many female storytellers of the region. In her collected tales there are stories of clever girls, wise crones, and magic animals, as well as glimpses of tales from other places as they eased their way into the Sami consciousness.
The University of Minnesota Press has released an English translation of the book. Barbara Sjoholm translated By the Fire: Sami Folktales and Legends from Danish.
