Today is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It was the largest extermination camp run by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II. More than a million people were murdered there. Today, only a handful of survivors are still alive. 

Patrick Hicks is an author and writer-in-residence at Augustana University. His books include the novel "The Commandant of Lubazec," the short story collection "The Collector of Names," and the poetry anthology "Library of the Mind."
