The Black travelers’ guide to Jim Crow South Dakota

PBS

This interview is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

It wasn't until 1967 that South Dakota passed a civil rights law that said "No person shall be excluded on account of race, color, religion, or national origin from full and equal enjoyment of any accommodation." Prior to that, Green Books existed for Black motorists to provide information on businesses at which they were welcome.

Liz Almlie has blogged about Green Books on her South Dakota history website. Almie joined us in August to talk about South Dakota Green Books and where her research took her.
