Oglala Lakota Artspace provides connection place for Pine Ridge artists

First Peoples Fund

This interview is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

The Oglala Lakota Artspace building was completed in Kyle, South Dakota, in 2021. Since its construction the building has become an environment where artists on the Pine Ridge Reservation can learn, share and grow their businesses.

Bryan Parker is "Rolling Rez" coordinator. He says the Oglala Lakota Art Space complements Rolling Rez mobile art van. The Artspace provides studio space, offices, and other resources to artists in the Pine Ridge community. A recording studio is also under construction.

Helene and Waylon Gaddie have studios in the OLA. Helene is a traditional/community-based artist and the founder of the nonprofit Generations-Indigenous Ways. She says she values having an area at the Artspace she can organize her work. Waylon says he appreciates having an opportunity to continue his family's artistic traditions.

You can find out more about the Oglala Lakota Artspace on the First Peoples Fund's website.
