Sandy Garnett

This interview is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh.

The Black Hills Balinese Gamelan group is a community musical ensemble based in Spearfish, South Dakota. They seek to offer an experience of the essential aspects of Balinese music and dance through education and performance.

The group, which includes more than a dozen members can often be heard jamming at Leones' Creamery in Spearfish.

Rodney Garnett is retired world music teacher at the University of Wyoming. He connected with Gamelan during his travels.

Pak Made Lasmawan is a Balinese drummer and composer.

The two artists joined Lori Walsh on In the Moment to discuss the Gamelan and its cultural and religious significance in Bali and Spearfish.

The Black Hills Balinese Gamelan group will perform at the Rocky Mountain Balinese Gamelan Festival in Denver this April. You can also see them this weekend, Sunday, April 3rd, 4 p.m. at Spearfish United Methodist Church.
