A nationally renowned cartoonist with South Dakota ties has died.

Chris Browne passed away earlier this week. He was best known for his “Hagar the Horrible” cartoon strip.

A post from the National Cartoonist Society said the Sioux Falls artist died peacefully after a long-term illness.

Chris Browne took over the comic from its creator – his father, Dik Browne – in 1989. Chris died just one day after "Hagar the Horrible" celebrated its 50th anniversary, according to the NCS post.

Browne was 70 years old.
