Telling contemporary Lakota stories through children's fiction

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

S.D. Nelson remembers hearing his Native American grandma's stories while sitting at the kitchen table. He took his memories of her and her warmth as inspiration for his own storytelling.

Nelson returns to In the Moment to talk about his latest book, "Grandma's Tipi: A Present-Day Lakota Story."

He discusses the people, culture and inspiration behind his work and dives into the power of telling Native American stories in contemporary settings.

Plus, he covers his involvement in the Read at Home program. He says many Native American children aren't reading at their grade level. Putting educational magazines in their hands may help change that.
