Aberdeen City Council recently approved a plan to add sculptures to their downtown’s Main Street.
The city built sculpture platforms over a decade ago and now is finally getting the chance to use them.
Alexa Sheldon, executive director of Aberdeen Downtown Association, said that the sculptures will increase activity.
"People want to see the art and experience downtown and it gives us a special flavor. So I think it's going to be a really great addition to our downtown and make it look more beautiful and appealing for visitors and people who live here," Sheldon said.
Sheldon said Aberdeen adding sculptures to their downtown will strengthen both a shared South Dakota identity and Aberdeen's culture.
"I think it's a really cool thing if cities and South Dakota have a similar flavor and feel when you're in them that means we're building a memorable experience in our state as a whole but I do hope that we have original pieces made just for us here in Aberdeen to create our own, you know, sub-identity within the list of South Dakota cities that have great street art and sculptures," Sheldon said.
She said Main Street will feature a mixture of permanent and temporary sculpture.
Installation of the first permanent piece, which is inspired by an Aberdeen boy, is expected to complete by mid-summer.
