Extraction date set for original Hugh Glass Monument near Lemmon

Explorers – mark your calendars. The effort to officially remove the century-old John Neihardt Hugh Glass Monument near Lemmon is slated for the last two weeks of October.

Come November, only the larger, newer monument will remain on the grounds of Shadehill Reservoir.

Buried inside the monument’s structure is a time capsule placed by a party led by Neihardt in 1923.

While there are local voices advocating for the monument to stay, the legal ownership of the memorial and whatever is found within has fallen to Neihardt’s descendants.

The final home the monument and contents of the time capsule will be the Neihardt Center in Bancroft, Nebraska.
