The American Legion in Pierre is hosting the company building a new U.S. Navy combat ship named after the state’s capital.
The company, Austal USA, will deliver presentations Tuesday, March 26th, at 12 p.m. Central time on the commissioning process of the USS Pierre. Anyone interested in learning more about the ship can attend.
There are three stages to the shipbuilding process: the keel jaying, the christening, and commissioning. The official keel laying began last summer in Alabama. Christening of the ship is planned for this summer with its full commissioning planned for 2025.
The USS Pierre Littoral Combat Ship is the second naval ship to be named after South Dakota’s capital.
The ship will eventually join the US Naval fleet as a combat ship used to protect near-shore efforts.
