The Great Plains Zoo has announced the return of African Lions to Sioux Falls for the first time in 31 years.
The lions, Simba and Amahle, were each transferred from other zoos with the hopes that the duo will bring about some cubs together.
The lions are taking the next month to acclimate to their new surroundings, care team, and each other. Their new habitat is one of the largest built for African Lions in North America, including space for a meerkat mob.
The new mob of meerkats are arriving from another zoo soon. The current meerkats, Biff and Clementine, will remain in the giraffe building for the foreseeable future.
Zoo officials plan to host a ribbon cutting on June 28 to let the public meet the lion pair, and see the new habitat.
