Wade Medicine's "Protect our People" mural in Art Alley

The Sinew Fund from Racing Magpie is backing a new mural in Rapid City's Art Alley.

Artist Wade Medicine painted the mural titled "Protect our People." Medicine said it brings attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women as well as racism and discrimination in Rapid City.

Medicine has volunteered with the Just Us Mural Project in Pennington County — a diversion program that offers young people an opportunity to avoid entering the justice system.

Like many youth in the JUMP program, Medicine said art has helped him overcome his own challenges in life and hopes the mural inspires others.

"I just want to encourage people to keep pushing forward no matter how hard it is," said Medicine. "We're not alone. We're all together. We're all bringing each other up, rather than bringing each other down."

Medicine debuts his mural at an artist reception Saturday, Aug. 10 at 10:30 a.m. in Art Alley near 7th St.

Krystal is the local host of "All Things Considered."
