Eight nominated for 2024 Spirit of Dakota Award

The nine-foot bronze sculpture “Spirit of Dakota," which stands at the entrance of the Crossroads Hotel & Huron Event Center, is the source for the state-wide Spirit of Dakota Award. Dale Claude Lamphere, nationally recognized sculptor and artist, is the creator. This sculpture was unveiled and dedicated in October 1987 by the citizens of Huron. The “Spirit of Dakota Award” is Huron’s unique gift to the women of South Dakota.

The Spirit of Dakota Award Society announces nominees for its annual award.

The society said communities from across the state nominated eight women who they feel have demonstrated vision, courage, and strength of character in the development of family, community, or the state.

The 2024 nominees are:

  • Patricia Helmer Aurand of Belle Fourche
  • Julie Brookbank of Mitchell
  • LaVonne Gaspar of Sioux Falls
  • Gayle Van Genderen of Plankinton
  • Tiffany Myrum of Sisseton
  • Miranda O'Bryan of Rapid City
  • Maria Beth Rinehart of Onida
  • Sharon Scott of Mitchell

They’ll be honored at the 38th annual Anniversary Celebration and Award Banquet on Oct. 12, 2024, at the Huron Event Center.

The award is inspired by Dale Lamphere’s nine-foot bronze pioneer lady in Huron.
