Turner County is breaking ground on a new courthouse, replacing the historic courthouse that had been in place since 1902.
County officials say while the original was a cornerstone for over a century, the building had begun to fail. Several structural issues were found in recent years — to the point that last November, the building had to be evacuated. It was demolished in February.
Officials broke ground on the new 34,000 square foot courthouse Wednesday. The project is expected to cost just under $20 million.
“Anyone who has been through this process knows how truly difficult it is to make this happen," said Turner County Commission Chair Jared Hybertson. I’m grateful to those who have worked on this project to bring us to this point. Their commitment, vision, and hard work is why we will now have a new courthouse to serve the citizens of this county for the next century, and generations to come.”
