Sioux Falls turns to art in efforts to slow traffic downtown

You may notice more color along the streets of downtown Sioux Falls. That’s because the city is piloting a new art initiative that utilizes the pavement as a canvas.

The Intersections Project put the art of local artist Cameron Abbas on the crosswalks on Phillips Avenue and 11th street. He said the designs are supposed to resemble home rugs to welcome all types of people in Sioux Falls.

The City of Sioux Falls said the goal is to promote traffic slowing measures while also beautifying pedestrian heavy intersections.

Funding for the project comes from a Visual Arts Commission and Active Transportation Board Grant.
