Farmers bring ideas for U.S. Farm Bill update

The current U.S. Farm Bill was signed two years before the pandemic. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 features farm-saving commodity support programs and federal crop insurance.

A federal safety net helps farmers withstand economic, political, and climate volatility. But experts say that safety net is not meeting the needs of today’s farm families.

Doug Sombke leads South Dakota Farmers Union. He spoke with Lori Walsh about ideas for updating the Farm Bill, the importance of listening during negotiations, and progress on "right to repair" agreements.

Lori Walsh is a special correspondent with SDPB and host of the "In the Moment" podcast.
