SDPB presents two free, 60-minute screenings of never-before-seen footage from THE VIETNAM WAR, the new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.
The public is invited to two opportunities to see this special preview:
Wednesday, August 16, at 6pm, Ramkota Hotel, Pierre – Hosted by the South Dakota Veteran Service
Officer Association (SDVSO) and South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs.
Thursday, August 17, at 7pm, Ramkota Hotel, Pierre – Held in partnership with the South Dakota
Cultural Heritage Center. In addition to the screening, Frank A. Blazich, Jr., PhD, will provide opening
remarks. Dr. Blazich is the Curator of Modern Military History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of
American History. A reception for veterans and their families follows the screening. During the
reception, SDPB producers will be on-hand to record interviews with Vietnam War & Vietnam Era Veterans and others who have stories to share.and others who have stories to share.
The public is also invited to a presentation on preserving Vietnam War Era historical items on Friday, August 18, at 1pm at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Dr. Frank A. Blazich and South Dakota State Archivist Chelle Somsen will discuss how to preserve military memorabilia, artifacts, photos, letters, and other items. The program is free and open to the public.
