South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced 14,338 South Dakotans are eligible to receive refunds from a recent settlement with Turbo Tax’s parent company Intuit.
“These South Dakotans were among 4.4 million consumers nationwide who were tricked into paying to file their federal tax return which should have been free,” Jackley said. “The good thing is those people who were impacted will receive a check in the mail automatically and will not have to file a claim.”
The settlement was announced last year, with every state including the District of Columbia receiving part of the $141 million payout. South Dakota received $444,456.88.
Eligible South Dakotans include those who paid to file with Turbo Tax for tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018 but were eligible for the IRS Free File Program. Settlement fund administrator Rust Consulting will email all eligible consumers to notify them of their refund.
Checks should begin arriving this week. The amount is determined by the number of tax years the consumer qualifies for, and most should receive around $30.
