Gov. Kristi Noem is appointing Joe Fiala as the Commissioner of GOED, or the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

Fiala joined GOED in 2012 and since worked as a director of many areas including research, business development and partner relations. He said he is excited for the new position.

“I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues and economic developers across the state to help businesses grow and to positively impact the economy of South Dakota,” said Fiala.

He replaces Chris Schilken, who stepped down in February to serve as deputy commissioner.

Jackson Dircks is a Freeburg, Illinois, native. He received a degree from Augustana University in English and Journalism. He started at SDPB as an intern before transitioning to a politics, business and everything in-between reporter based in Sioux Falls.
