How Do Apples Grow?

One of the world’s most ubiquitous fruits might seem like a simple thing to grow. But inside the common apple is a secret — and it’s been challenging apple growers since Ancient Greece.

South Dakota grows 11 different kinds of apples, and they grow from the west side of the state to the east side.

Although the state has a decent variety of Apples, most aren’t ready to eat until late August or early September. Some may even require more time to grow, and may not be ready to eat until mid October.

Types of Apples in South Dakota:

- Chestnut Crab

- Zestar

- Sweet 16

- Honeycrisp

- Cortland

- Freedom

- Liberty

- Keepsake

- Regent

- Snowsweet

- Haralson
