My kids always love a good color-by-number activity. For a cute Christmas tree craft, we changed it to color-by-letter and instead of coloring, the boys decorated the tree with different colored of pompoms. This ended up being a fun name activity for my preschooler, as well as a cute and easy Christmas craft for kids.
What You’ll Need:
- green cardstock paper
- school glue
- colored pompoms
- scissors
How to Prepare:
- Cut a Christmas tree out of green cardstock paper.
- Make a legend. I used letters in my preschooler’s name. I then glued different colored pom poms underneath each letter as the key.
- Write the letters you used in the legend randomly on the tree. (Think ornaments and lights!)
How Kids Decorate-by-Letter:
It’s really fun and simple! My preschooler went through the letters of his name in order. The uppercase g is a purple pompom. He found a “G” on the Christmas tree and glued the pompom on it. On to the next letter, lowercase e. It’s orange. Glue that on a lowercase e. And so on.
He went through each letter in his name and then started over again. Eventually he realized he could do all the uppercase g’s at one time and then all the lowercase e’s. That sped up the process.
We had a little hitch because there’s two lowercase e’s in his name. That letter became a toss up. He could decide what color pompom he wanted to put on the lowercase e’s.
He also has an uppercase g and a lowercase g, so this activity was also great for upper and lowercase letter recognition.
Eventually he decorated the entire Christmas tree!
