A South Dakota nonprofit that supports transgender youth is suing Gov. Kristi Noem over a recent contract termination.
The Transformation Project had a contract through the Department of Health to hire a community health worker.
Noem canceled the deal shortly after a conservative news outlet reported on the contract. Her office said Noem does not support the Transformation Project’s efforts.
The $136,000 contract was funded through a federal CDC grant.
The Transformation Project filed its federal lawsuit against Noem and the Secretary of Health Thursday, according to court documents. The suit argues terminating the contract violated the organization’s civil rights by discriminating based on gender.
