The South Dakota Highway Patrol is planning 17 sobriety checks across the state during April.

Authorities say the checkpoints are designed to encourage sober driving.

Checkpoints are scheduled for Meade, Roberts, Jackson, Pennington, Lake, Lyman, Butte, Clay, Brown, Davison, Minnehaha, Codington, Spink, Fall River, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties.

The Highway Patrol says there were nearly 700 alcohol-involved crashes in South Dakota in 2021 – resulting in 56 deaths.
