South Dakota Attorney General's office warns of new phone scam

South Dakota Office of Attorney General

The state Attorney General’s office warns of telephone scams targeting Medicare recipients.

The Consumer Protection Division reports that scammers tell victims their Medicare benefits are due to expire and then asks for their current Medicare number.

Medicare will never call recipients uninvited and will typically send a written statement in the mail first, according to the attorney general's office.

If you've been affected by the scam and given out your Medicare number, call Medicare to receive a new number. Contact the Attorney's General's Consumer Protection Division if you've been receiving packages that contain knee, wrist, or back braces that you did not order.
