Charges filed in death of Moody County Chief Deputy Sheriff

South Dakota Office of Attorney General

Officials have charged a Sioux Falls man in the death of Moody County Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok. That's according to state Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Joseph Gene Hoek was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated eluding.

Prorok was killed Friday afternoon when struck by a vehicle.

Court documents indicate the incident began when Madison Police officers responded to a call about a man making "homicidal threats" near a business.

The incident led to a high-speed chase. Prorok was deploying spike strips and was hit by the speeding car driven by Hoek.

Prorok was 51 years old. He served with the Moody County Sheriff's Office since 2016.

Governor Kristi Noem ordered flags at half-staff through Thursday in honor of Prorok.

Visitation will take place from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Feb. 7, 2024 at the Chester Area High School Gymnasium. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. Feb. 8, 2024 at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse in Madison.
