Attorney General Marty Jackley is hinting at another investigation into inappropriate use of state funds.
Jackley brought up the matter while discussing a Department of Social Services embezzlement case during an interview with SDPB’s In the Moment on Tuesday.
He said more details on the DSS investigation will become available as lawmakers look into the issue. But he also hinted his office is involved in another financial investigation comparable to significant state cases like EB-5 or Gear Up.
“It’s a little bit different natured than the ones South Dakota has experienced. But it has a common theme that it’s taxpayer dollars, and – at least in the attorney general’s opinion – it’s not going in the right place. And there needs to be checks and balances to prevent that," Jackley said. "And again, the governor’s office is cooperating with us, and I appreciate that. They’re not putting up road blocks, they’re not sweeping it under the rug. They’re reaching out to the attorney general and saying, ‘we’re finding these things, you need to look at it and do what you need to do.’”
Jackley said his office will make a determination on charges in the case "in the near future," but didn't offer a specific timeline. He did not give any other details about the investigation.
