An Aberdeen man is indicted for computer-generated child pornography charges – marking the first case stemming from a newly passed “deep fake” law.

William Webster Bragg is indicted on one count of distributing child pornography and six counts of possessing child pornography.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

A new South Dakota law that went into effect July 1 makes the possession, distribution, and manufacturing of computer-generated child pornography a crime. This includes the creation of AI generated images, commonly known as “deep fakes.”

That statute was proposed by Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Jackson Dircks is a Freeburg, Illinois, native. He is pursuing a degree in English, Journalism and Secondary Education at Augustana University and planning to graduate in May 2025. He plans to pursue a career in sports journalism.
