A shotgun allegedly brandished by a suspect during a June 26 officer-involved shooting in Sioux Falls.

State investigators say a Minnehaha County Sheriff’s deputy was justified using lethal force in an incident that left a suspect hospitalized.

It stems from a June 26 standoff at Sioux Falls home.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said authorities tried serving a warrant on a suspect, 47-year-old Anthony Jellis, when he refused to come out of the residence. The warrant was for alleged simple assault on law enforcement.

Jackley said when law enforcement entered the home, Jellis pointed a shotgun at officers. A deputy fired 10 rounds, hitting Jellis twice.

Jellis was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.

DCI’s investigation and review of the evidence indicates that the deputy’s actions were justified,” said Jackley Thursday. “The suspect pointed a loaded shotgun at law enforcement officers, and there was a clear and present danger to the officers’ safety.”

Jellis charged with four counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement as well as the original four counts of simple assault that triggered the warrant.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting in South Dakota this year, Jackley said.
