State officials say authorities shot and killed a suspect after he fired at officers and took a hostage during an arrest attempt.
Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office identified the suspect as 31-year-old Schace Looking Horse.
Cheyenne River Sioux tribal police tried pulling Looking Horse over Tuesday night in connection to a weapons call near the community of Green Grass. He refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit that continued outside the reservation into Haakon County.
Other law enforcement agencies joined the pursuit. Jackley said during the chase, Looking Horse fired a gun at officers several times, striking several law enforcement vehicles.
After his vehicle was disabled, Looking Horse took a hostage at gunpoint and stole another vehicle. That vehicle was eventually disabled as well. Jackley said officers shot and killed Looking Horse after it stopped.
The hostage received minor injuries. No officers were hurt.
Law enforcement agencies that assisted include the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Haakon County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jones County Sheriff’s Office, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office and the Philip Police Department.
The DCI is investigating, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting. Jackley said the U.S. Marshal's Office and the FBI are assisting with the investigation.
This is the sixth officer-involved shooting South Dakota this year.
