As state looks at prison rehabilitation, former Chief Justice discusses the foundation

As the state grapples with a high recidivism rate and how to address rehabilitating substance abuse offenders, many possible solutions are being looked at.

Former South Dakota Chief Justice David Gilbertson was instrumental in integrating drug, alcohol and mental health courts in the state’s judicial system.

SDPB had a conversation with Gilbertson about his work on the issue of addiction in South Dakota’s prison system.

Legislators on a summer study are currently looking into rehabilitative reform for offenders, especially those suffering from addiction.
