The federal government finalized an $18 million settlement with 12 people who were abused by an Indian Health Service doctor. That’s according to the Montana Free Press.

Pediatrician Stanley Patrick Weber worked for IHS on the Pine Ridge Reservation from 1995 to 2016.

In 2019, he was convicted of abusing Native American boys during his time in South Dakota after a similar conviction in Montana the year before. He was sentenced to 5 life sentences and three 15-year sentences in Rapid City federal court.

A 2020 independent report on Weber’s misconduct found IHS leaders failed to stop well-documented suspicious behavior.

This settlement marks the latest in a string of lawsuits against the federal government related to Weber’s abuse.
