Lake Norden, a town of 502 in eastern South Dakota erupted in an urgency of police and fire sirens last Thursday, April 9. But nothing was on fire, no building had collapsed. Instead, the ear splitting sirens of police cars, fire trucks, and emergency vehicles escorted a parade of Hamlin School District teachers in a “we miss our students” parade. As teachers displayed their messages of “we miss you,” “keep reading,” and “thank you for your sacrifice,” the students in small groups and in their cars along Main street reciprocated with “We love you,” “Hamlin teachers rock,” and “We miss you.” The parade was earlier that day in Hazel and Bryant, and later was repeated in Hayti.
