The executive director of the South Dakota Board of Regents is taking on a new role as leader of the Nebraska Department of Education.
Dr. Brian Maher was named the next Nebraska Commissioner of Education at the department's most recent meeting.
Maher held the role of Board of Regents executive director since 2020. He recently announced plans to resign from the board after his contract expires in June.
Prior to joining the board, he was superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District for five years.
Maher is originally from Nebraska, according to his bio on the Board of Regents' website. He was superintendent of schools in two Nebraska districts, Kearney and Centennial, from 1999 to 2015.
