The program Passport to Careers will host sessions across the state this summer to teach young people about career options and help prepare them for their futures.
The annual program was started last year by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation.
“We had a pretty good turnout for our first year last year, and continue to evaluate and make improvements, but it’s a pretty fun and dynamic selection that we have,” Kendra Ringstmeyer, the director of workforce development for the department, said.
The sessions are open to anyone aged 14-24 and are completely free. Multiple in-person sessions will be held in 13 different cities, in addition to five virtual sessions.
Topics include how to change a tire, workplace etiquette and job search readiness. Participants will also have the chance to take part in community service, tour businesses and meet with business leaders.
“Continuously, we’re looking to expand what it is that we do or look at different opportunities and different ways to engage our young adults,” Ringstmeyer said. “We really want to ensure that they know that there are plenty of opportunities right here at home in South Dakota and show them what that future might look like.”
