Former South Dakota State University football coach John Stiegelmeier is taking on a new role with the university.
He has accepted a position as senior advisor with the SDSU Foundation, officials said Tuesday. That’s a nonprofit that leads the school’s fundraising efforts.
University officials said his role will focus on relationship building and representing SDSU at public events.
“Laurie and I have been truly blessed to have served this university for the past three decades,” Stiegelmeier said in a press release announcing the appointment. “I consider this an opportunity to make a difference for this university, the faculty, staff and the students. It’s an absolute honor.”
Stiegelmeier retired in January shortly after leading the Jackrabbits to their first-ever FCS national football championship. He is the winningest football coach in school history, accumulating 199 victories over his 26-year career as head coach.
