Black Hills State University has named a new dean of the school of education.
Longtime educator Jarrett Moore assumed the position this week after years at the university.
A Macon, Georgia native, he has a 25-year background in education at levels ranging from middle school to higher education. He started at BHSU in 2017.
“Our faculty is really second-to-none at Black Hills State," Moore said. "We have great students, great community feel, and so I really just want to build on what’s existing and build on partnerships with K-12 districts, other regental universities, and see what new avenues we can open up.”
He stressed the value of a strong education department at BH.
“Black Hills State started as a normal (teachers) school a long time ago, so we’ve always had a school of education," Moore said. "It’s a real important thing for our local communities – especially rural communities. The health of their communities is often tied to the success of their schools.”
Though the university needs students to create the next generation of educators.
“We’ve got a strategic enrollment plan at Black Hills State, and within the college of ed we have a recruitment and retention plan," Moore said. "So, we’re really making sure those two align, then trying to get out and recruit, and once we get them here retain them.”
Other priorities for Moore include his role in the seven-year accreditation process, contacting local partners, and working with other state universities.
