Proposed changes to the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings are available for public comment.
Updates to the standards include new teacher resources, an updated map of South Dakota reservations, and more indigenous language and pronunciation guides included in materials.
The Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings are not required to be taught in public schools but are optional for teachers to include in classwork.
The Board of Education Standards meets on September 16 to consider the changes. If approved, changes would take effect in the 2025/2026 school year.
