Northern State University president Neal Schnoor is departing the institution after four years in the role.
While recently named as the priority candidate for a chancellor job at Wayne State in Nebraska, it is unclear if he has been named for the role at this time.
Former Black Hills State University president Laurie Nichols will serve as the interim head of Northern State, according to a press release.
The search for the institutions next president begins in the Fall semester.
